Roadside Emergencies

Each time you get behind the wheel of your car, there is a chance that you will have to deal with a roadside emergency. From getting into a car accident, or hitting a major pothole that pops your tire, knowing how to deal with any emergency can help to ensure that you stay safe. Keep these steps in mind to help you handle any roadside emergency you may run into.

  • Move off the road – get your car off the side of the road as soon as you can after an accident. If there is no exit in site, look for a wide shoulder or an emergency lane, and move as far to the side as you can. Even if it means causing more damage to your vehicle, make sure to get out of the way of other motorists.
  • Put on your hazards – turn your hazard lights on while you are on the side of the road to let other people know that there is something wrong. It will give them more time to move over so that they do not go speeding right past you.
  • Stay in your car – do not get out of your car until you are safely out of traffic, and always get out on the opposite side of the traffic, even if it means crawling over the seat. Once you are out, you can take a look at your car, or simply wait for help to come.
  • Stay with your car – do not start walking away from your car to find a better place to wait. Even though it may take a little time for help to come, wait with your car so that you are there when help does arrive.
