Safely Decorate Your House For The Holidays With These Tips

Christmas lights

Follow these tips when lighting up your house for the holiday season.

Stringing up twinkling lights all around your house is one of the best ways to get into the holiday spirit. However, it can also cause serious a safety hazard if you do not take the time to make sure that you are properly hanging up your lights. Keep these holiday lights safety tips in mind to help celebrate the season.

  • Check each strand of lights for frayed ends, cracked cords, or loose connections before you hang them up.
  • Keep your Christmas tree well watered. The combination of tinder dry trees and electrical shorts can be enough to start a dangerous fire
  • If you have any old lights, it is time to replace them. Not only will new strands of lights keep shine brighter, but they also have fused plugs that will prevent sparks after a short circuit.
  • Replace any burnt out bulbs as soon as possible. Always use the correct type of bulb for the strand of lights.
  • Extension cords can easily overheat. Simply touch test all extension cords and unplug any cords when they get too hot.
  • Never use nails, tacks, or screws to hang up lights since they can pierce the cord. Instead, use plastic hooks to hang up your lights.
  • Tape down all extension cords that are on the ground so that your holiday guests do not trip over them.
  • Only use lights that are rated for outdoor use for your outside display. Indoor lights have much thinner insulation, which means they will crack much easier.
  • Never leave your lights on when you go to bed at night or leave your house for an extended period of time.
