Updating Your Home Inventory After The Holidays
Tips To Update Your Home Inventory
With the holiday season officially over, it is the best time to update your home inventory to ensure all of your new gifts are properly protected under your homeowner’s insurance policy. A home inventory is a complete record of all of your assets that will help you make an insurance claim after a disaster. Keep these tips in mind to ensure that your home inventory is properly updated after the holidays.
- Get your valuables appraised – if you have any highly valuable items, such as fine art or jewelry, get them appraised so that you have their actual value of record. Also, make sure to get any family heirlooms appraised. Your insurance company will use the appraisal to ensure that you have the right amount of insurance coverage for each item.
- Create a digital inventory – if you do not already have a digital inventory of all your assets, make one. Take pictures of all of your possessions and label them with important details about each item. You can also take a video of all your items while talking over the video, explaining the value and any other important details.
- Update your written inventory – make sure all of your belongings are included in your home inventory, no matter how small the item. If you can, keep receipts of as many items as possible with your inventory.
- Keep your inventory safe – keep your inventory away from your home so that it will be safe if your home is destroyed. Consider keeping it in a safe deposit box at the bank or with a trusted family member or friend.
