How Your Dog Could Be Affecting Your Homeowners Policy

Many homeowners aren’t aware of the relationship between dogs and homeowners insurance premiums. In fact, the most common claim made against a homeowners insurance premium isn’t damage or even theft, but rather dog bites. Dog bites account for a vast amount of homeowners insurance claims every year. If your dog bites someone on your property, and wasn’t protecting your property from an intruder while doing so, your homeowners insurance coverage will have to cover the damages.

For this reason, certain breeds of dog can sometimes affect a homeowner’s insurance premiums. In addition to this, if your dog does bite someone you will see an increase in your premium overall. If you have a dog that is known to be skittish or aggressive towards others, it’s a very good idea for you to secure the dog in a way that it cannot possibly harm visitors. You may also wish to put up warning signs so that mail carriers and other delivery people are aware of the hazard, but it should be noted that these signs alone aren’t always enough to protect you from a claim of damages against you.
