Ways to Celebrate Flag Day

Flag Day is celebrated on June 14th each year to remember the date when the United States flag was officially adopted. The original flag, which featured 13 stars and 13 stripes to represent the 13 colonies that originally founded the country, was officially adopted on June 14, 1777. Although the day has not been officially declared a national holiday, it is celebrated throughout the country as a day to remember freedom, liberty and the belief in justice.

Display the Flag

A simple way to celebrate Flag Day and show loyalty to the country is by putting out an American flag. The flag can be placed on a flag pole in front of a business or a home. Smaller flags can also be displayed in windows or in specific rooms in the house.

Flag Raising Ceremonies

Flag raising ceremonies are another way to celebrate the adoption of the American flag and that large step toward independence and freedom. The ceremony is a solemn event that can be done to traditional military music.

Assignments for Students

Teachers and parents can celebrate the holiday by giving students and children assignments that relate to the holiday. Assign essays on the topic of the American flag and how it has changed throughout history. Develop quizzes or tests for extra credit that discusses the design of the flag and the symbolism that was created with the U.S. flag.
